Health services have an important role to play in sustainable development by reducing the disease burden. A healthy community reflects a sense of mental and physical well being and is the foundation for achieving all other goals. Understanding the need of addressing community health for realizing national and global development goals, Eminence and Partners for World Health organized the 1st Global Conference on Community Health in 2013. Based on the remarkable success and lessons learned from the 1st Global Conference on Community Health, Eminence and Partners for World Health organized the 2nd Global Conference on Community Health from 19-22 March 2014 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The academic session of the conference consisted of 21 parallel sessions including 5 plenary sessions on 5 broad themes: Health Services, Changes in Diseases Profile, Nutrition, Food Safety and Food Security, Health System Strengthening and Proximal Determinants of Health.
“Sustaining Change in Community Health” was the headlining theme of this conference with a notion to bring health, nutrition, water-sanitation, and other social sector expertise from home and abroad for sharing evidence on sustainable interventions in community health. The team from Partners for World Health has given their maximum effort to bring experts from USA and create a network for sharing knowledge and skills. We also had excellent technical support from WHO, UNFPA, UNAIDS, BRAC, Water Aid and Orbis International. Their support gave the boost of confidence for taking our development agenda forward.
This year, we received more than 250 abstracts including more than 50 abstracts from 12 countries. Scholarships were arranged for the international participants with a vision to develop a long-term partnership for promoting sustainable development goals with the civil society from the respective countries. Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Wilson Center, and PHE Ethiopia have also send their representatives which has a great impact to make the conference successful.
Mohammad Nasim, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present to grace the closing session of Global Conference on Community Health. The closing session was held at Hotel Rupashi Bangla on 22 March 2014.
